I’ll never forget a sermon I once heard about waiting well. The pastor used King David as an example.

Scholars believe it was around fifteen years between the time Samuel anointed David, the shepherd boy, and the moment he finally became king.

Fifteen. Years.

And most of that time? He was tending sheep.
Doing his day job.
Showing up.
Being faithful in the small, everyday stuff.

That must have taken incredible patience.

Can you imagine? Knowing God had chosen you, knowing there was a call on your life, and still spending your days herding sheep?

I don’t know about you, but I’d be impatiently banging on the palace doors like, “Um, hey Saul? Pretty sure it’s my turn now!”

And yet, David waited well. He trusted God.

Patience is one of the gifts the Holy Spirit grows in us, but I’ll be honest: I’ve always struggled with it.

It was one of the first things God began to change in me after I stopped drinking. Once the fog lifted, I finally had the clarity to ask Him for help.

Whether it’s freedom from alcohol, healing in your marriage, clarity about a decision, waiting to hear about a job, or—fill in your blank here—waiting is hard.
